Injured hiker flown from remote mountain trail

A 53-year-old hiker from Cape Town injured his leg while descending into a river canyon on day two of a five day hike in the Hex River Mountains on Wednesday afternoon.

Unable to safely continue the group of hikers used their Spot X 2-way satellite messenger to send a message to a family member, who immediately called the emergency number – 021 937 0300.

A small team on board the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS / Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter were flown to scene.

The injured hiker was helped into the helicopter and flown to a nearby landing zone.

He was driven to hospital by a friend.

The incident was concluded shortly before 17h30.

I joined the 4WD Club in March 2008 at an AGM. One of portfolios I enjoyed was outings coordinator. This was, after all, the purpose and main reason for owning my Landy! One of the venues I enjoyed supporting was Boegoeberg because the owner, Sabrie de Beer, always went above and beyond to make me look good as an organiser! The trail was challenging with spectacular views; the campsite is grassed and well maintained; Sabrie always maintained the donkey boiler with plenty of hot water at all times! We enjoyed a few Year End Functions there. It became a go-to favourite for Cheryl and I as break away on our own.Image attachmentImage attachment+6Image attachment
